The Hidden Costs of Orthodontics: What Insurance Covers and What It Doesn’t

Understanding the Full Cost of Orthodontic Treatment

Orthodontic treatment is an important investment in your long-term oral health and appearance. Whether you’re seeking orthodontics for children, orthodontics for adults, or orthodontics for teens, the cost of braces or aligners can be significant. While many people are aware of the initial cost of treatment, few realize that there are often hidden expenses, such as maintenance, follow-up care, and what your insurance will or will not cover.

At Smiles by Pocock, we believe in providing transparency about the full costs of orthodontic treatment, including what you can expect to pay out-of-pocket and what your insurance will cover. Let’s explore the hidden costs of orthodontics and how you can plan for them.

What Insurance Covers in Orthodontics

Basic Coverage for Braces and Aligners

Most dental insurance plans provide some coverage for orthodontic treatment, but the extent of that coverage can vary widely depending on the plan and the age of the patient. Many plans cover a percentage of the cost for braces or clear aligners, particularly for children and teens. Typically, insurance will cover about 50% of the total cost of treatment, but this varies by plan and provider.

Lifetime Maximum Coverage

Many dental insurance policies have a lifetime maximum coverage amount for orthodontics, meaning they’ll only pay a fixed amount for braces or aligners over the life of the patient. Once this maximum is reached, the patient will be responsible for the remaining balance. For example, if your insurance covers $1,500 for orthodontic treatment and the total cost of your braces is $6,000, you’ll be responsible for the remaining $4,500.

Some plans cover orthodontic treatment only for children under a certain age, usually 18. For adults, orthodontic coverage may be limited or excluded, so it’s important to check with your insurance provider before starting treatment.

Preventive Care and Diagnostics

Insurance often covers some diagnostic procedures that are necessary before treatment begins, including X-rays and consultations. However, these are typically only covered if deemed medically necessary. For example, an X-ray taken for the purpose of assessing orthodontic needs might be covered, but an extra X-ray for cosmetic reasons may not be.

What Insurance Doesn’t Cover in Orthodontics

Cosmetic Procedures and Aligners

While insurance may cover the cost of traditional metal braces, it often does not cover more cosmetic treatments like clear aligners (e.g., Invisalign). Clear aligners are typically considered a cosmetic procedure rather than a medically necessary treatment, so many insurance plans do not cover them.

If you prefer Invisalign or other clear aligners for orthodontics for teens or adults, be prepared for the possibility that your insurance will only cover a small portion of the treatment, or none at all. However, flexible payment options and financing plans may help offset this additional cost.

Retainers and Post-Treatment Care

After braces or aligners are removed, many patients need to wear a retainer to keep their teeth in their new positions. Unfortunately, insurance typically does not cover the cost of retainers, as they are considered part of the post-treatment care rather than the active orthodontic treatment. Retainers can be costly, especially if they need to be replaced over time.

Additionally, follow-up visits to ensure the stability of the treatment are often not covered, so regular check-ups and any adjustments may come at an extra cost.

Other Hidden Costs

Aside from the cost of braces or aligners themselves, other potential expenses may not be covered by insurance, including:

  • Emergency visits: If a bracket comes loose or a wire breaks, you may need to visit your orthodontist for repairs or adjustments. These visits might incur additional fees.

  • Appliance replacement: If you lose or break any appliances, such as aligners or expanders, replacement costs will usually be your responsibility.

  • Extractions: In some cases, teeth may need to be extracted before orthodontic treatment begins. Insurance may cover the cost of extractions for dental health reasons, but not for orthodontic purposes.

Strategies to Manage the Costs of Orthodontics

Flexible Financing Options

At Smiles by Pocock, we understand that the cost of orthodontics for children, orthodontics for adults, and orthodontics for teens can be overwhelming. That’s why we offer flexible financing plans to make treatment more affordable. You can break down your payments into manageable monthly installments, which can help reduce the financial burden of paying for treatment upfront.

Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs)

If your employer offers an HSA or FSA, you may be able to use these funds to pay for orthodontic treatment. These accounts allow you to set aside pre-tax dollars for medical expenses, including braces and aligners. This can help lower the overall cost of treatment by reducing the amount you pay in taxes.

Insurance Reimbursement

If your insurance doesn’t cover the full cost of treatment, you may still be able to submit receipts for reimbursement. Some patients find that their plan allows partial reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses, so be sure to check with your insurance provider for details.
